Celebrating International Women's Day 2020

Here at LSVAP, we strive to forge a gender equal world. For International Women's Day, we want to uplift strong women who inspire us on a daily basis; we want to raise awareness against bias; and most of all, we want to take action for equality.

"An equal world is an enabled world." #IWD2020 #EachforEqual

Our Intake Specialist Jennifer uplifts her Mother, Edneida:

"I give thanks to my mother, Eneida, today and every day for showing me how to be an independent, hard-working woman. She came to the United States in the 80s to pursue the American dream and a future of opportunities. One of her greatest accomplishments was becoming a U.S. Citizen. Another accomplishment was raising three successful daughters as a single mother. She has shown us that despite the struggles and imperfections, with determination and good work ethic, anything is possible."

Our East Texas Coordinator Josefina uplifts her sister, Anna:

"The woman I want to uplift on Day of the Woman is Anna Castro Argueta, my sister. She is a Communications professional who partners with organizations and campaigns that are looking to mission shift from serving impacted communities to creating transformational change alongside communities by restoring power and developing leaders."

Engagement Specialist Laura wants to uplift the lives of 26 transgender/gender nonconforming people that were killed in 2019 in the U.S. due to fatal violence; the majority of them being Black transgender women.

"Trans women are women and violence against trans/gender nonconforming individuals is something we must address if we ever hope to achieve gender equality."

BSW intern Kat wants to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Lindsey Doe:

"For #InternationalWomenDay I want to highlight Dr. Lindsey Doe, a clinical sexologist, who provides comprehensive sex education for young adults at no cost through her YouTube platform: sexplanations."

MSW intern Claudia uplifts her mother:

“I choose my mother, she has a strong character but has always shown me support and unconditional love. She has overcame many obstacles and continues to stand tall. I am grateful to have her as a role model.”

MSW intern Wilmarie uses this opportunity to uplift her mother as well:

"For International Women's Day, I want to highlight mi mamá. Since I was young she drilled into my head that I could knock down any barrier put in my way; that there were no limits. She taught me to love others deeply, but above all myself. She has inspired me to prioritize my healing and growth. Mi mamá is the woman I admire most in the world and I'm so lucky to have her as a role model."
